Ireo Devil’s Circuit: Ludhiana’s 1st Obstacle Run
Ludhiana : Sunday, December 2nd, 2012
Location : Ireo Waterfront Sales Gallery, Ludhiana
On 2nd December 2012, the ground was all set for a day of adrenaline pumping fun and adventure at Ireo Waterfront township campus. More than 1000-strong crowd from Ludhiana including 500 participants braved up for a first-of-its-kind test of grit and stamina at India’s maiden obstacle race, Ireo Devil’s Circuit. The 4-km military-styled adventure run, an extremely popular format in US and Europe, was brought to Ludhiana by Ireo in association with sports management company GameOn India.
The race kicked off in the early hours of the Sunday morning with the first lot of 80 participants geared to chart a rugged 4 km terrain, which entailed crawling, jumping and climbing over nets, pits and tires among other tasks. Bloody Logs, Hells Nest, Devils Swing, Torture Trenches, Tunnels of Darkness and Killer Rolls were just a few of the many obstacles that the participants had to cross to complete the Devil’s circuit. “Finding my way out of a pit full of freezing water was the highlight. The run was muddy and difficult but full of adventure and fun,” said Gurvir Singh, who completed the course within an hour’s time.
For the less nimble runners, scaling the wicked web turned out to be an arduous task. This particular challenge demanded a 12-feet climb over a spider like net. The consistent movement of ropes and need for a firm grasp had some participants swaying from one side to another. Meanwhile, the most fun obstacle, according to some runners, was the torture trench, which gave the runners a feel of an army personnel. “I had heard of such runs happening in United States but to have it in Ludhiana was very exciting,” said Dr. Geeti Arora, one of the runners.
The event turned out to be a success with a hearty participation of 500 people who ran the race in 6 batches with 80 to 100 participants in each batch. Staying true to the credo of the run, all the participants were awarded a medal, certificate, t-shirts as well as a can of beer and energy drink at the finish line.
Amidst the fun, adventure and live Punjabi music, the visitors also took the opportunity to take a look at sample villas and plots of the proposed Ireo Waterfront township.
Being the first-of-its-kind adventure run in India, the event attracted good media coverage from national channels ESPN and NDTV, English dailies and vernacular papers.
